Code Vein 2 boss fight featuring intense anime-style combat, demonic enemy design, and fast-paced soulslike action

Code Vein 2 Review: A Stylish Soulslike That Sharpens Its Fangs

The return of Code Vein 2 proves one thing instantly. This series is no longer trying to find its footing. It knows exactly what it is.

Building on the foundations of the original, Code Vein 2 doubles down on fast combat, expressive builds, and anime-infused drama. At the same time, it tightens level design, improves enemy variety, and introduces smarter systems that reward experimentation. The result is a soulslike sequel that feels more confident, more aggressive, and far more refined.

While it doesn’t reinvent the genre, it absolutely earns its place within it.

A Darker World With Clearer Direction

From the moment you step into Code Vein 2’s ruined world, the difference is noticeable. The environments feel more deliberate. They feel more interconnected. And crucially, they feel designed rather than stitched together.

Instead of sprawling but unfocused spaces, the sequel leans into compact, layered areas packed with shortcuts and vertical paths. As a result, exploration feels rewarding without becoming exhausting. Moreover, environmental storytelling takes centre stage. Subtle details hint at past tragedies, long before characters spell them out.

This darker tone works in the game’s favour. It grounds the anime aesthetic, giving weight to moments that might otherwise feel melodramatic.

Combat That Hits Harder and Smarter

Combat remains the heart of Code Vein 2. Thankfully, it’s sharper than ever.

At its core, the familiar stamina-based, dodge-focused system returns. However, nearly every mechanic has been refined. Weapon handling feels tighter. Enemy attacks are clearer. Animation feedback is stronger. As a result, every encounter feels more readable, even when the screen fills with effects.

Additionally, enemy behaviour has been significantly improved. Foes flank more often. They punish careless healing. They bait dodges before striking. Consequently, button-mashing rarely works, even against standard mobs.

Boss fights, in particular, stand out. Each one introduces a distinct rhythm, forcing players to adapt rather than rely on muscle memory. Some favour aggression. Others demand patience. A few punish hesitation brutally.

Blood Codes: Build Freedom Done Right

One of Code Vein’s defining features returns with meaningful upgrades. Blood Codes are back — and they’re better than ever.

Rather than locking players into rigid classes, Blood Codes allow seamless switching between builds. You can move from heavy melee to spell-casting in seconds. More importantly, Code Vein 2 encourages this flexibility. Certain encounters almost demand a change in approach.

Furthermore, the progression system has been streamlined. Unlocking Gifts feels more intuitive. Passive abilities matter more. Active skills now synergise in smarter ways. This makes experimenting feel exciting rather than overwhelming.

Because of this, Code Vein 2 rewards curiosity. Try something new, and the game meets you halfway.

Companions That Actually Matter

AI companions return, but this time they feel far more intentional. They’re no longer just safety nets.

Each companion offers distinct tactical advantages. Some excel at crowd control. Others focus on buffs or emergency healing. Importantly, they’re also better at reading the battlefield. They reposition intelligently and support without stealing the spotlight.

However, Code Vein 2 wisely allows solo play to remain fully viable. Turning companions off increases difficulty, but never feels unfair. This balance ensures both newcomers and genre veterans can tailor the experience to their taste.

Narrative Focus Without Overload

The story in Code Vein 2 is more restrained. And that’s a good thing.

Instead of front-loading exposition, the narrative unfolds gradually. Short, impactful cutscenes replace lengthy monologues. Character backstories emerge naturally through dialogue, memories, and environmental cues.

This approach keeps the pacing tight. It also allows emotional beats to land more effectively. When tragedy strikes, it feels earned. When hope flickers, it feels fragile.

While the anime tone remains unmistakable, it’s better balanced with quieter, reflective moments.

Level Design That Encourages Mastery

One of the biggest improvements lies in level structure. Areas loop back on themselves intelligently.

Shortcuts feel meaningful. Checkpoints are placed thoughtfully. As a result, repeated deaths rarely feel like wasted time. Instead, each run teaches you something new about enemy placement or terrain advantages.

Verticality also plays a bigger role. High ground matters. Narrow corridors force careful spacing. Open arenas test situational awareness. These elements combine to create levels that reward mastery rather than memorisation.

Visual Style With Purpose

Visually, Code Vein 2 stays true to its identity. Stylised characters. Dramatic lighting. Heavy contrast.

However, technical improvements make everything cleaner. Textures are sharper. Performance is smoother. Effects are less cluttered. Consequently, combat remains readable even during intense encounters.

Enemy designs deserve special mention. Bosses, in particular, showcase imaginative silhouettes that communicate danger instantly. You know what you’re facing, even before it attacks.

Difficulty That Respects the Player

Code Vein 2 understands something crucial. Challenge should teach, not punish.

While the game is demanding, it rarely feels cheap. Deaths usually stem from poor positioning or impatience rather than unclear mechanics. Moreover, the generous build system offers multiple solutions to most problems.

If one approach fails, another likely works better. This flexibility makes the difficulty curve feel fair, even when it spikes.

Performance and Polish

From a technical standpoint, Code Vein 2 performs well across the board. Load times are short. Frame pacing remains consistent. Bugs are minimal.

While not flawless, the level of polish is noticeable compared to its predecessor. This refinement helps maintain immersion, especially during longer play sessions.

Final Thoughts: A Sequel That Knows Its Strengths

Code Vein 2 doesn’t chase trends. It doesn’t water itself down. And it doesn’t forget what made the original resonate.

Instead, it refines every core idea. Combat feels sharper. Systems feel smarter. The world feels more cohesive. Most importantly, player choice feels genuinely meaningful.

For fans of soulslike action RPGs with personality, this sequel delivers exactly what it promises — intensity, flexibility, and style in equal measure.

Code Vein 2 proves that evolution doesn’t require reinvention. Sometimes, it just needs confidence.
