Stray, the indie game sensation that took the gaming world by storm upon its release in July, is now making its way to the silver screen. Publisher Annapurna has officially announced its plans to adapt this unlikely phenomenon into a Stray animated movie adaptation.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Annapurna Animation, the newly established animated film division of the company, is building on the success of its debut feature, Nimona, by bringing the 2022 adventure game to life on screen. This marks the first game from Annapurna Interactive’s impressive portfolio to receive the cinematic treatment, with more such adaptations in the pipeline, as hinted by the publisher. While specific details like the director, cast, and release date for the Stray film remain undisclosed, it’s clear that this venture has significant potential.

Leading the charge at Annapurna Animation are former Disney Animation executives Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein, who are excited about the project’s unique qualities. Baird explained, “This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this Stray animated movie adaptation. I think it’s one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat. How did they pull that off, and how are we going to pull that off in the movie? We will, even though sometimes it feels impossible, but we know that’s the essence of the game and the key to telling the story.”

Stray, developed by the French studio BlueTwelve, unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world devoid of humans. Players assume the role of a cat that becomes separated from its friends and embarks on a quest to reunite with them. Along the way, the cat forms unique bonds with sentient robots, including a flying drone named B-12. Stray garnered widespread acclaim in the gaming community, earning accolades such as the Best Debut Indie award at the Game Awards and recently becoming available on Xbox.
