Marvel’s Wolverine Review: Do the Claws Cut Deep Enough?
Few superhero games have arrived with expectations quite as high as Marvel’s Wolverine. Developed by Insomniac Games, the studio behind the hugely successful Marvel’s Spider-Man series, Logan’s solo adventure promised something darker, bloodier and considerably more brutal.
On paper, Wolverine is almost perfect for an action game. He has razor-sharp adamantium claws, incredible healing abilities and decades of complicated history to explore. More importantly, his fighting style opens the door to combat that Spider-Man could never deliver.
The finished game certainly embraces that brutality. However, beneath the blood, claws and cinematic presentation is a surprisingly traditional action experience.
So, does Marvel’s Wolverine live up to its potential?
A Different Kind of Insomniac Marvel Game
Anyone expecting another open-world adventure similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man may be surprised. Marvel’s Wolverinetakes a much more focused approach.
Instead of giving players a huge city to freely explore, the adventure moves through more controlled environments and cinematic sequences. This gives the story a faster pace. It also allows Insomniac to carefully construct Logan’s encounters.
The approach makes sense for Wolverine. He does not need skyscrapers to swing between or dozens of distractions scattered across a map.
However, that tighter structure has drawbacks. Areas can sometimes feel restrictive, particularly when environments appear larger than the space players are actually allowed to explore. Consequently, the world does not always feel as interactive as its impressive visuals suggest.
The game feels deliberately old-school in places. That simplicity may appeal to players tired of enormous open worlds, but others could find it limiting.
Wolverine Is the Real Star
Fortunately, Logan himself is one of the game’s biggest strengths.
Rather than relying entirely on Wolverine’s reputation as an angry, seemingly unstoppable fighter, the story explores the damaged man underneath the adamantium skeleton.
This version of Logan carries considerable emotional baggage. His past follows him throughout the adventure, while his relationships with other characters reveal different sides to his personality.
Liam McIntyre delivers a strong performance as Wolverine, helping make the character feel convincing during both explosive action sequences and quieter conversations.
The result is a Wolverine who feels more complicated than a simple superhero power fantasy.
That matters. Logan has always been at his most interesting when his physical strength clashes with his emotional vulnerability.
Brutal Combat That Can Become Repetitive
Naturally, the claws play an enormous role.
Combat is violent, fast and deliberately aggressive. Wolverine launches himself towards enemies, tears through groups and uses his abilities to keep pressure on opponents.
There is plenty of spectacle.
The problem is that the fighting does not always develop enough as the campaign progresses. What initially feels wonderfully brutal can gradually become repetitive.
Players have access to different attacks, combinations and abilities, yet encounters frequently encourage a similar aggressive rhythm. That can make later fights feel more routine than they should.
Boss battles add some variety, although they do not completely solve the problem.
This is perhaps where comparisons with Marvel’s Spider-Man become unavoidable. Spider-Man’s mobility, gadgets and environmental opportunities created numerous ways to approach combat. Wolverine is intentionally more direct.
That suits the character. Nevertheless, it leaves the game with fewer opportunities for experimentation.
A Visually Impressive Marvel Adventure
Where Marvel’s Wolverine rarely disappoints is presentation.
Insomniac has created detailed characters and environments that help sell the darker atmosphere. Logan’s injuries and recovery also reinforce his famous healing abilities during gameplay.
Meanwhile, the cinematic sequences regularly deliver the blockbuster moments expected from a major PlayStation release.
There are familiar Marvel characters and locations to discover too, giving longtime fans plenty to recognise.
However, the game never forgets whose story this is.
Rather than feeling like an enormous Marvel crossover built around endless cameos, Wolverine remains at the centre. That narrower focus works in the game’s favour.
Does Marvel’s Wolverine Live Up to the Hype?
Marvel’s Wolverine is an interesting change of direction for Insomniac Games.
Its greatest success is Logan himself. The character is violent, damaged and emotionally complicated, while the performance behind him gives the story genuine weight.
The combat can also be enormously satisfying. Few superhero games allow players to unleash this level of raw aggression.
Yet there is a frustrating feeling that the game could have pushed further.
Combat becomes repetitive, exploration is limited and the traditional structure occasionally struggles to match the ambition of the presentation.
Even so, Wolverine fans are likely to find plenty to enjoy. This is a polished, bloody and unmistakably Logan-focused adventure.
It may not redefine superhero games in the way Marvel’s Spider-Man once did. However, when the claws come out and Wolverine takes centre stage, there are flashes of exactly what players have been waiting for.
