Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours
The latest Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours brings major developments from Rockstar Games, Xbox, Mortal Shell 2 and Pokémon.
Rockstar is making a significant move into GTA roleplay shortly before GTA 6. Meanwhile, Mortal Shell 2 has received its first major update, questions surround Xbox’s next console, and Pokémon has revealed what is coming next.
Here are four of the biggest gaming stories from the last 48 hours.
Rockstar Makes GTA Online Roleplay Official
Rockstar Games is strengthening its relationship with the GTA roleplaying community through nopixel V, a new GTA V roleplay experience.
The nopixel V closed beta is set to begin on 8th September 2026, initially opening to selected players and creators through the Rockstar Games Launcher.
It marks an important moment for GTA roleplay. RP servers have helped keep Grand Theft Auto V thriving by allowing players to create characters, careers and ongoing stories across Los Santos.
Nopixel has become one of the biggest names within that community.
The latest version will introduce improved character customisation, refreshed environments and new ways to make money on either side of the law. Smarter pedestrians should also make Los Santos feel more reactive.
New areas include the Pixel Hotel & Casino, while Cypress Flats has received a substantial overhaul.
Most interestingly, the move comes just months before GTA 6. Rockstar’s closer relationship with the roleplay community naturally raises questions about whether RP could eventually become a bigger part of the Grand Theft Auto ecosystem.
For now, however, nopixel V remains focused on GTA V.
Gaming World News: Mortal Shell 2 Receives Major Improvements
Mortal Shell 2 is already changing considerably following its release, with developer Cold Symmetry rolling out its first major update.
The patch introduces new items, progression improvements, balance adjustments and performance changes. It also addresses several areas highlighted by the game’s early players.
New additions include Fragile Tarstones and Glimpse Stones, both of which introduce different rewards as their durability decreases.
Egon’s Stone has also been added, giving players the ability to revive at the entrance to a dungeon at the cost of durability.
However, the improvements go beyond new items.
Character progression now offers greater flexibility, while additional Beacons should improve exploration. The riposte system has also been reworked to improve how damage scales against enemies.
Bosses have received plenty of attention too, with numerous encounters adjusted alongside changes to weapons, Shells and enemy behaviour.
It is a sizeable update so soon after launch. More importantly, it shows Cold Symmetry is reacting quickly to player feedback.
Xbox Helix Disc Drive Question Remains Unanswered
Microsoft is preparing its next generation of Xbox hardware, but one major question remains unanswered.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has stopped short of confirming whether Project Helix will feature a physical disc drive.
Instead, the focus appears to be on balancing performance, efficiency and affordability.
That uncertainty will matter to players who continue buying physical games. Digital downloads have become increasingly important, but boxed releases still appeal to collectors and gamers who value physical ownership.
Microsoft is also exploring ways to bridge the gap between physical and digital libraries. Its Disc-to-Digital plans could allow supported physical Xbox games to receive digital entitlements linked to the original disc.
Project Helix may also be more than a single traditional console.
Xbox has increasingly discussed its future as a broader family of devices. That could potentially include consoles, PCs, handheld systems and cloud gaming.
As a result, different Helix devices could potentially offer different hardware configurations.
However, until Microsoft reveals more, the future of the Xbox disc drive remains uncertain.
Gaming World News: Pokémon World Championships Reveal What Comes Next
The 2026 Pokémon World Championships concluded with several announcements covering competitive gaming, mobile titles, trading cards and entertainment.
One major reveal concerned next year’s tournament. The 2027 Pokémon World Championships will take place in Singapore, bringing another huge international Pokémon event to Asia.
Pokémon GO also featured prominently.
Mega Evolutions are heading into competitive battles, potentially introducing new strategies for players. Armored Mewtwo is also preparing to return as part of the upcoming Pokémon GO Fest Mega Finale.
Trading Card Game fans received new reveals too, including upcoming Mega Evolution cards and fresh artwork.
Meanwhile, Pokémon Champions is expanding with new Z-Mega Evolutions, including Mega Lucario Z and Mega Absol Z.
The announcements were not limited to games.
The Pokémon Company also revealed Pokémon: Wild Card, a new animated movie inspired by the Pokémon Trading Card Game and planned for 2027.
Together, the announcements demonstrate just how widely the Pokémon franchise continues to expand.
