Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours
The gaming industry has delivered another packed 48 hours, with Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 dominating the conversation. Major announcements, long-awaited trailers and surprising reveals have given players plenty to discuss.
Among the biggest stories, Metro 2039 has emerged as far more than another post-apocalyptic shooter. Meanwhile, The Witcher 3 is preparing for another major return, complete with an overhaul and fresh expansion content. Strategy fans have also been given their first proper look at Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.
However, those were only part of a much larger Gamescom showcase. From Gears of War to Control and Rainbow Six, the event delivered an enormous selection of gaming news.
Here are the biggest Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours.
Metro 2039 Looks Beyond the Traditional War Game

Metro 2039 was one of the more thought-provoking games to emerge from Gamescom.
Developed by 4A Games, the latest entry takes players back into the bleak, post-apocalyptic world that has defined the Metro franchise. A new gameplay trailer provided a deeper look at its first-person action, atmosphere and environments.
The game is being developed using the 4A Engine and currently has a February 2027 release window.
Yet Metro 2039 appears determined to explore more than monsters, underground tunnels and survival.
War has always been central to Metro. However, the real-world experiences surrounding 4A Games give the latest project additional weight. With the ongoing impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affecting members of the development team, themes surrounding conflict, freedom and survival carry an unavoidable significance.
Rather than presenting warfare purely as entertainment, Metro 2039 appears interested in its human consequences. The horrors of war and the price of freedom are prominent themes.
That could give the game a very different emotional tone.
Of course, the familiar Metro ingredients remain. Players can expect dark environments, threatening encounters and intense first-person combat. Nevertheless, the story behind the game may prove equally important.
Metro has always been bleak. This time, that darkness could feel considerably more personal.
Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 Delivers a Huge Night of Reveals

Gamescom Opening Night Live once again became a major focal point for the gaming calendar.
Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the roughly two-hour presentation was packed with trailers, announcements, release dates and gameplay reveals.
One of the opening surprises was Nodus Fall, a fantasy RPG from HoYoverse. It appears noticeably different from titles such as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, featuring a more mature visual direction and apparent co-operative gameplay.
Elsewhere, Rainbow 6 Tactics received an extended gameplay showing. The single-player tactical experience will put players in command of operators undertaking missions around the world, with a launch planned for 2027.
Xbox fans also received a major update.
Gears of War: E-Day showcased more of its campaign and revealed a release date of 6th October 2026. The trailer offered further insight into its story and the Locust invasion.
Meanwhile, Control Resonant continued to build anticipation for Remedy Entertainment’s next adventure. The sequel arrives on 24th September 2026, making it one of the more immediate Gamescom announcements.
Clearly, Gamescom offered something for almost every type of player.
Gaming World News: The Witcher 3 Is Preparing for Another Comeback

Few games have demonstrated the staying power of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and its journey is apparently far from finished.
A The Witcher 3 Remastered project has now been announced, promising an overhaul that will be made available free to existing owners. That alone makes the announcement significant considering the game’s enormous existing audience.
However, another reveal attracted just as much attention.
The long-awaited expansion Songs of the Past was finally shown, giving Witcher fans another reason to return to Geralt’s world.
The prospect of fresh Witcher 3 content more than a decade after the original game’s 2015 launch demonstrates the extraordinary longevity of CD Projekt Red’s RPG.
It also arrives at an interesting time for the franchise.
Interest in The Witcher remains enormous, while the wider series continues moving towards its next generation. Revisiting The Witcher 3 could therefore bridge the gap between the adventures players already know and whatever comes next.
For existing owners, a free overhaul makes returning even more appealing.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Reveals Its Strategy Gameplay

Westeros is also heading back to gaming screens, although this time players will be commanding armies rather than following a single hero.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros received a new gameplay trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The strategy title takes inspiration from large-scale real-time strategy experiences, giving George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe something of an Age of Empires-style transformation.
The game is currently targeting early 2027.
It is an intriguing direction for the franchise.
Game of Thrones naturally lends itself to strategy. Rival houses, shifting alliances, enormous armies and battles for territory were fundamental parts of the television series and books.
Consequently, an RTS could allow players to experience those conflicts from a completely different perspective.
The first gameplay footage also confirmed the appearance of familiar faces. That should help connect the strategy experience to the characters and stories audiences already recognise.
For fans who have wanted greater control over the political and military struggles of Westeros, War for Westeros could be one to watch.
Gamescom Brings Plenty More Release Dates and Surprises
The Gamescom announcements extended well beyond the biggest franchises.
The Blood of Dawnwalker, the vampire-focused action RPG from Rebel Wolves, is scheduled for 3rd September 2026. Its latest trailer showcased sword fighting, creatures and character interactions.
Meanwhile, sci-fi RPG Exodus finally secured a 7th April 2027 release date. Its Gamescom appearance also introduced Salt, an octopus companion capable of piloting a mech suit.
There was good news for action RPG fans too.
Path of Exile 2 will leave Early Access and reach version 1.0 on 11th December 2026.
Classic franchises were represented as well. Crazy Taxi: World Tour revealed multiplayer gameplay and is planned for 2027, while Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake offered another look at its reimagined fantasy strategy experience.
Gamescom certainly did not lack variety.
Gaming World News Shows 2027 Is Already Looking Huge
The latest Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours demonstrate just how quickly the industry’s release calendar is filling up.
Games such as Metro 2039, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, Rainbow 6 Tactics and Exodus are already making 2027 look incredibly competitive.
At the same time, established favourites continue finding new audiences. The Witcher 3 is preparing for another revival, while franchises including Crazy Taxi and Heroes of Might and Magic are returning in new forms.
Perhaps most interestingly, developers are finding different ways to approach familiar genres.
Metro 2039 appears determined to make players think about the human cost behind conflict. Game of Thrones is embracing large-scale strategy. Meanwhile, Gamescom showcased everything from tactical shooters and RPGs to city builders and co-operative adventures.
The next few months will be busy.
And judging by the sheer number of announcements coming out of Gamescom, 2027 could be even bigger.
