Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours

The gaming industry rarely stands still, and the latest 48 hours have delivered plenty for players to talk about. From a fresh wave of Xbox Game Pass releases to renewed competition between two of gaming’s biggest shooters, August is proving particularly busy.

Elsewhere, Bethesda players have another reason to keep a close eye on their mod libraries. Meanwhile, questions surrounding Sony’s next-generation console continue to grow.

Here is our latest Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours, covering some of the biggest developments across Xbox, PlayStation, PC and beyond.

Xbox Game Pass Adds Another Wave of August Games

Sophia in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, coming to Xbox Game Pass in August

Microsoft’s Game Pass catalogue is continuing to expand throughout the second half of August. Several new releases are arriving across cloud, console, handheld and PC.

Egging On joined the latest wave on 18th August, becoming available through Game Pass Premium after previously being accessible through Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

However, subscribers have plenty more to look forward to.

On 19th August, Vapor World: Over the Mind arrives in Game Preview for cloud, console and PC through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. BlazBlue Entropy Effect X and Relooted also expand their availability to Game Pass Premium on the same day.

The following day brings Starsand Island, before Aerial_Knight’s DropShot and Blood Dungeon arrive on 25th August. The variety is considerable, giving subscribers several different genres and experiences to explore.

One of the biggest additions arrives on 27th August.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches across Xbox Series X/S and PC, with cloud and handheld support also available. It will be accessible through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from release. The game takes place 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem and follows Sophia on a journey involving combat, ancient mysteries and the Minotaur’s Island.

Then, Young Suns arrives on 31st August, followed by Shelldiver on 1st September.

Games carrying the “handheld” designation have also been optimised for handheld play. That distinction is becoming increasingly relevant as portable PC and Xbox gaming continues to grow.

However, new arrivals also mean departures.

On 31st August, Another Crab’s Treasure, I Am Your Beast, Neon Abyss, One Lonely Outpost and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt – Remastered Edition are set to leave the service. NBA 2K26 follows on 6th September.

Therefore, subscribers currently playing any of these titles may want to prioritise finishing them before access disappears.

Gaming World News: Battlefield 6 Turns Up the Pressure on Call of Duty

Competition in the first-person shooter market is also heating up again.

Battlefield 6 is hosting another limited free trial, giving more players an opportunity to experience its large-scale multiplayer action without purchasing the full game.

The timing is particularly interesting because Activision is preparing to begin early access for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta on 21st August. That phase runs until 25th August for eligible pre-order customers on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.

An open beta then follows between 28th August and 1st September. This second period opens access to everyone and includes Nintendo Switch 2 players.

Modern Warfare 4 is therefore about to become one of the biggest talking points in gaming.

The beta includes several multiplayer maps and modes, alongside weapons, Operators and new gameplay systems. For the first time in a Call of Duty beta, early access players will also get an exclusive campaign mission, giving fans more than the traditional multiplayer preview.

With Battlefield encouraging players to jump into its own combat experience around the same period, the rivalry between the franchises is once again impossible to ignore.

Both series offer different approaches to military shooters. Nevertheless, they are competing for many of the same players.

That makes the coming weeks particularly important.

Fallout 4 Players Warned About Mod Problems

Bethesda fans have another update to watch closely, although this one may cause headaches for dedicated mod users.

A new Fallout 4 update focuses on improvements to the Creations system. However, updates to long-running Bethesda titles can create compatibility problems with existing community modifications.

As a result, mod users have been advised to save their load orders and game saves before updating. PC players who depend on script extenders or heavily modified installations may have even more reason to be cautious.

This is particularly significant because Fallout 4 has developed an enormous modding community during its long lifespan. For many players, mods are now fundamental to the experience.

An incompatible update can therefore affect everything from minor visual improvements to complete gameplay overhauls.

Furthermore, Bethesda has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is also due to receive another update. Full details have yet to emerge, but modded Skyrim players are being encouraged to prepare their installations beforehand.

It is a familiar situation for Bethesda’s communities.

Official updates can improve core systems and introduce useful features. However, they can also disrupt carefully constructed mod lists built over months or even years.

Gaming World News: PlayStation 6 Release Date Remains Uncertain

Finally, attention has returned to the future of PlayStation.

Sony has still not settled on a final release date for the PlayStation 6, according to comments attributed to company CEO Hiroki Totoki. One major complication is the continuing pressure surrounding hardware components, including memory.

Demand from AI infrastructure and data centres has placed additional strain on parts of the technology supply chain. Consequently, planning a mass-market console launch several years in advance is becoming more complicated.

Traditionally, console generations have followed reasonably predictable cycles. The PlayStation 5 launched in 2020, meaning speculation has naturally centred around what comes next.

Yet Sony appears unwilling to rush into committing to a date.

That may prove sensible. A next-generation PlayStation would require millions of components while also needing to launch at a price consumers consider reasonable.

The current PlayStation 5 ecosystem also remains highly active. Therefore, Sony has room to continue supporting its existing hardware while watching how component markets develop.

For players, it means PS6 rumours should still be treated cautiously.

Until Sony announces an official launch window, any specific release dates remain speculation.

Another Packed 48 Hours for Gaming

The latest Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours demonstrates just how quickly the industry is moving.

Xbox Game Pass is strengthening its August catalogue, while major games are simultaneously preparing to leave the service. Meanwhile, Battlefield and Call of Duty are fighting for attention as Modern Warfare 4 approaches its beta weekends.

Bethesda’s latest Fallout 4 update provides another reminder of the complicated relationship between official patches and community mods. Skyrim players could soon face similar concerns.

At the same time, the PlayStation 6 remains one of gaming’s biggest unanswered questions.

With new releases, betas, hardware speculation and major updates all arriving together, the rest of August looks set to remain extremely busy.
