Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations Review

When Doom: The Dark Ages launched, it introduced a fresh direction for the iconic shooter series by combining medieval fantasy with the franchise’s trademark demon-slaying action. Now, the Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations expansion builds on that foundation with new weapons, tougher enemies and an even greater emphasis on fast-paced combat. While it doesn’t completely reinvent the formula, it delivers an action-packed experience that feels like a natural next chapter.

In this Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations review, we take a closer look at what the expansion offers, what it improves and whether it’s worth stepping back into Hell.

A Strong Continuation of the Story

Revelations picks up where the main campaign leaves off, expanding the Doom Slayer’s journey while adding more depth to the game’s dark medieval world. Rather than serving as a standalone adventure, the expansion feels like an important extension of the original story.

The narrative isn’t overly complicated, but that’s never been the series’ main focus. Instead, it provides enough context to keep players invested while allowing the gameplay to remain centre stage. Fans of the base game will appreciate the additional lore and the chance to revisit this brutal universe.

Although the campaign is relatively short, it never feels rushed. Every mission introduces fresh challenges, keeping the action engaging from beginning to end.

The Chain Spear Brings a Fresh Twist

The standout addition is undoubtedly the Chain Spear, which quickly becomes one of the expansion’s defining features.

Rather than simply acting as another weapon, it completely changes how players move around the battlefield. The Chain Spear allows the Doom Slayer to rapidly close the distance between enemies, launch into combat and maintain momentum during intense encounters.

As a result, battles feel noticeably quicker than those in the base game. Players are encouraged to stay on the offensive, chaining attacks together while constantly repositioning across each arena.

It takes a little practice to master. However, once you become familiar with its mechanics, it feels like an essential part of the combat system rather than an optional extra.

Faster Combat Makes Every Fight Exciting

Combat has always been the heart of Doom, and Revelations continues that tradition brilliantly.

Enemy encounters are larger, more varied and often more demanding than before. You’ll regularly face multiple enemy types at once, forcing you to think carefully about movement, weapon choice and timing.

Instead of relying on a single strategy, every battle encourages experimentation. Switching between firearms, melee attacks, defensive abilities and the new Chain Spear creates a satisfying flow that rewards aggressive play.

The expansion also does an excellent job of increasing the intensity without becoming unfair. Every arena feels carefully designed, offering just enough space to stay mobile while keeping the pressure firmly on the player.

Impressive Environments and Clever Level Design

The medieval-inspired setting remains one of The Dark Ages’ greatest strengths, and Revelations continues to make excellent use of it.

Players will fight through ancient fortresses, dark ruins and demonic landscapes, each filled with hidden pathways and optional secrets. Exploration has always been an important part of Doom, and this expansion rewards players who take the time to look beyond the main objective.

Collectibles are scattered throughout each level, giving completionists another reason to revisit missions. At the same time, the environments never distract from the fast-paced gameplay, striking a good balance between exploration and action.

Every location feels distinct, helping the campaign remain visually fresh throughout its runtime.

A Challenging but Rewarding Experience

If you’ve played previous Doom games, you’ll know they rarely offer an easy ride.

Revelations continues that tradition by introducing tougher enemy combinations and more demanding combat scenarios. Higher difficulty settings require quick reactions and a solid understanding of every mechanic available.

New players may initially find the pace overwhelming, particularly once several enemy types appear together. However, the difficulty rarely feels frustrating because every encounter can be overcome with better decision-making and improved timing.

Learning enemy attack patterns and making full use of your abilities becomes incredibly satisfying, especially during the expansion’s larger battles.

Smooth Performance and Stunning Presentation

One area where id Software continues to excel is technical performance.

Despite the chaotic combat and detailed environments, Revelations runs smoothly throughout the campaign. Explosions, lighting effects and enemy animations all contribute to spectacular battles without sacrificing performance.

The sound design is equally impressive. Every weapon feels powerful, while the heavy soundtrack perfectly complements the relentless action unfolding on screen.

Together, the visuals and audio create an immersive experience that captures everything fans expect from a modern Doom title.

Final Verdict

Our Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations review concludes that this expansion is a fantastic addition to the series.

Rather than dramatically changing what made the original game successful, it refines the formula with faster movement, more dynamic combat and a brilliant new weapon that transforms how battles unfold.

The campaign may not be especially long, but it makes excellent use of its runtime. Every mission introduces memorable encounters, rewarding exploration and exciting action that keeps players engaged until the very end.

For fans of Doom: The Dark Ages, Revelations is an easy recommendation. It successfully builds upon the original experience while delivering some of the most enjoyable combat the series has seen in recent years.

Whether you’re returning to finish the Doom Slayer’s latest chapter or simply looking for another adrenaline-fuelled shooter, this expansion proves there’s still plenty of life left in one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
