Gaming World News: Diablo 2 Goes VR and More
The gaming world rarely stays quiet for long, and the latest 48 hours have delivered another varied mix of industry developments. From an unexpected virtual reality transformation of a Blizzard classic to potential new Xbox hardware, there is plenty to discuss.
Elsewhere, Overwatch players are questioning another collection of region-exclusive cosmetics. Meanwhile, Supermassive Games has been hit by another difficult round of job losses.
Here are some of the biggest stories making headlines in our latest Gaming World News: Highlights from the Last 48 Hours round-up.
Diablo 2: Resurrected Gets an Unexpected VR Transformation

Diablo 2 has always been known for its distinctive isometric viewpoint, but one modder has demonstrated how different Sanctuary can feel from an entirely new perspective.
A fan-made project has transformed Diablo 2: Resurrected into a first-person virtual reality experience. Rather than looking down on the action, players can see the world through their character’s eyes.
The project builds upon existing community tools, including the D2R-3D camera modification, FlatVR and BodyWalk. The result allows the game’s existing 3D environments to be viewed in a way Blizzard never originally intended. Players can look around using their headset, while character movement and arms can be linked to VR controls.
It is a dramatic change for a game so closely associated with its traditional perspective.
Footage of the project shows just how much environmental detail becomes noticeable when the camera is brought down to ground level. Enemies that once appeared relatively small suddenly become far more imposing.
However, this is still very much an experimental community project rather than a polished VR conversion. Reports surrounding the project indicate that technical limitations remain, including issues linked to the game’s file integrity checks.
Even so, the experiment offers a fascinating glimpse at what Diablo could potentially feel like in VR. It also demonstrates how modding communities can breathe new life into familiar games years after release.
Overwatch Fans Frustrated by China-Exclusive Skins

Meanwhile, parts of the Overwatch community are once again discussing regional exclusivity after another collection of cosmetics was revealed for China.
The Defiled Anthem collection features new appearances for Shion, Kiriko, D.Mon, Reaper and Emre. However, the cosmetics are currently exclusive to the Chinese market.
That exclusivity has sparked frustration among players elsewhere.
China-exclusive Overwatch content is not entirely new. Blizzard’s publishing relationship with NetEase has previously resulted in cosmetics and promotions created specifically for the region. Nevertheless, the quality and elaborate visual effects of the latest skins have reignited the conversation.
Shion’s new appearance has attracted particular attention, with some fans disappointed that they will not be able to add the skin to their collections.
Cosmetics do not change the core gameplay experience, of course. However, character customisation remains a major part of modern live-service games.
For dedicated players, limited availability can therefore be frustrating. It becomes even more noticeable when particularly detailed designs are involved.
For now, players outside China will have to wait and see whether Blizzard eventually makes any of the Defiled Anthem cosmetics available more widely.
Xbox Elite Series 3 Leak Points to Major Controller Upgrades

Microsoft’s next premium Xbox controller may also be getting closer, with new information seemingly revealing several potential upgrades.
Details discovered within the backend of the Xbox Design Lab system reportedly reference a controller codenamed Edessa. While Microsoft has not officially confirmed that Edessa is the Xbox Elite Series 3, the information has fuelled speculation that it represents the next generation of the company’s premium controller.
The leaked configuration information points towards some significant improvements.
Most notably, there appear to be options involving both Hall Effect and TMR analogue sticks. These technologies use magnetic sensing and could help reduce the physical wear associated with traditional analogue stick designs.
Players may also have different stick resistance choices.
Additionally, the leaked information references advanced VCA haptics, impulse triggers and an audio scroll wheel. Different faceplates, rear paddles and D-pad configurations also appear to be among the potential customisation options.
If accurate, these features could make the next Elite controller considerably more customisable than its predecessor.
However, it is important to remember that Microsoft has not formally announced an Xbox Elite Series 3. Until that happens, the controller’s final specification, price and release date remain unconfirmed.
Still, information appearing through Xbox Design Lab infrastructure makes this an interesting hardware story to watch.
More Than 70 Staff Reportedly Leave Supermassive Games

Unfortunately, the latest Gaming World News also brings another reminder of the continuing employment uncertainty across the games industry.
More than 70 people are reportedly leaving Supermassive Games, the British studio behind Until Dawn, The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology.
The departures span multiple areas of the business, including developers, artists, producers, quality assurance and operations staff. Frank Tindle, Supermassive’s departing IT and Facilities Director, revealed that he was among those leaving after 16 years with the company.
The news follows an announcement made by Supermassive in August. At the time, the studio confirmed that it had begun a redundancy consultation process that could result in up to 75 roles being lost. The company said the move was necessary to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the business.
Supermassive released Directive 8020 earlier in 2026, continuing its focus on cinematic horror and branching narratives.
However, the latest departures show that even established studios with recognisable franchises remain exposed to the wider challenges affecting game development.
The human impact should not be overlooked. Dozens of experienced people are now searching for new opportunities across an already competitive industry.
