Assassin’s Creed Shadows: The Review

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has taken us through history, from Renaissance Italy to Ancient Egypt. Now, Ubisoft is delivering a long-awaited journey into Feudal Japan with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the gameplay, story, graphics, and overall experience in this detailed review.

A New Era: Assassin’s Creed Finally in Japan

Ubisoft has teased fans with the idea of a Japanese Assassin’s Creed for years. With Assassin’s Creed Shadows, they’ve finally answered the call, bringing players to the Sengoku period. This is a time of intense political turmoil, legendary samurai, and deadly shinobi.

The game introduces two main protagonists: Naoe, a skilled shinobi assassin, and Yasuke, a formidable samurai warrior. Players can switch between these characters, each offering a unique approach to combat and exploration.

Gameplay: A Blend of Stealth and Combat

Dual Protagonist System

The dual-protagonist feature allows for diverse playstyles. Naoe embodies the traditional Assassin’s Creed stealth mechanics. She can use shadows, distractions, and assassination techniques to eliminate enemies. Yasuke, on the other hand, embraces brute force. His combat is more aggressive, using traditional samurai weapons like the katana and nodachi.

Stealth Mechanics

Ubisoft has refined stealth gameplay to an impressive degree. The use of darkness and sound plays a crucial role. Shadows aren’t just for hiding; they are a strategic tool, allowing players to move undetected. Enemy AI reacts to noise, making silent assassinations more challenging and rewarding.

The grappling hook and wall-running mechanics add another layer of verticality. Players can scale pagodas, infiltrate enemy compounds, and disappear into the night like a true ninja.

Combat System

For those who love direct combat, Yasuke delivers a brutal experience. The duelling mechanics emphasise precise timing, counter-attacks, and strategic weapon selection. There is a clear influence from samurai cinema, making every battle feel intense and cinematic.

Naoe’s approach is more fluid, relying on speed and agility. She can chain stealth kills, use smoke bombs, and strike from the shadows before vanishing.

Story: A Tale of Honour and Betrayal

Setting and Plot

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in the late Sengoku period, a time of warlords, betrayal, and shifting alliances. The story follows Naoe and Yasuke as they navigate this dangerous world, each with their own motivations.

Naoe seeks vengeance for her fallen family, while Yasuke, based on the real-life African samurai, finds himself entangled in the deadly political landscape of Japan. Their paths intertwine in unexpected ways, making for an engaging and emotionally charged narrative.

Historical Accuracy

Ubisoft has always prided itself on historical detail, and Shadows is no exception. The world feels alive, filled with bustling villages, towering castles, and hidden temples. The game brings legendary figures and real-world events into the story, creating an immersive historical experience.

Open World: A Living, Breathing Japan

The world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is stunning. From cherry blossom gardens to stormy battlefields, every location is crafted with detail and authenticity. Weather plays a crucial role, with dynamic storms affecting visibility and stealth options.

Villages are filled with NPCs living their daily lives, adding to the immersion. Side quests explore different aspects of Japanese culture, including tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and legendary swordsmithing.

Graphics and Performance

Ubisoft has pushed the limits of their Anvil engine. The visuals are breathtaking, with realistic lighting, detailed character animations, and vast landscapes. The game performs well on next-gen consoles and high-end PCs, maintaining smooth frame rates even during intense battles.

Ray tracing enhances reflections and shadows, making night-time stealth gameplay even more immersive. Character models are intricately detailed, from Yasuke’s battle-worn armour to Naoe’s lightweight shinobi attire.

Sound Design and Music

The soundtrack perfectly captures the essence of Feudal Japan. Traditional Japanese instruments blend with modern orchestration, creating a dynamic and emotional score.

Sound design is equally impressive. Footsteps on tatami mats, the clash of swords, and the distant echoes of temple bells make the world feel real. Voice acting is top-tier, with both English and Japanese options available, adding to the authenticity.

Customisation and RPG Elements

Weapons and Armour

Players can customise both Yasuke and Naoe with different weapons and armour sets. Yasuke’s gear leans towards heavy samurai armour, while Naoe can equip lightweight shinobi attire for increased mobility.

Weapon upgrades allow for different combat approaches. Katana, wakizashi, kusarigama, and even ranged weapons like yumi bows give players a wide variety of choices.

Skills and Progression

The RPG mechanics are well-balanced. Players can develop their characters through skill trees that enhance stealth, combat, or survival abilities. Yasuke can master parries and devastating attacks, while Naoe can improve her agility and silent assassination techniques.

Side Quests and Exploration

The game offers a rich variety of side quests, each contributing to the overall world-building. Whether it’s investigating supernatural myths, training with legendary swordmasters, or helping peasants escape bandits, every side quest adds depth to the experience.

Hidden shrines, secret caves, and lost artefacts encourage exploration. Climbing towering castles and diving into underground tunnels make every moment feel like a discovery.

Multiplayer and Online Features

Ubisoft has introduced a co-op mode, allowing players to team up for special missions. This feature enhances replayability, letting friends experience the world of Shadows together.

Seasonal events and live updates keep the game fresh, offering new challenges and content over time.

Final Verdict

Pros:

  • Stunning open-world design
  • Engaging story with dual protagonists
  • Excellent stealth and combat mechanics
  • Authentic historical setting
  • Deep customisation options
  • Impressive graphics and sound design

Cons:

  • Some missions can feel repetitive
  • Enemy AI can be unpredictable at times
