Have you ever felt like you’re short of time when playing your favourite PlayStation game? Maybe you need to eat, shower, work or sleep but you just want to complete that level you’ve been stuck on for what seems like forever. Well, SIE’s (Sony Interactive Entertainment) recently acquired a patent for an “automated artificial intelligence control mode for playing specific tasks during gaming applications” that could be perfect for you.
The Sony AI patent application outlines a way how the AI could study a person’s gameplay and replicate it when the player isn’t able to be at the console or even assist when faced with harder challenges.
The patent suggests a default profile can be assigned to a user where the AI would simulate generic human behaviour, sounds kind of pointless right? However, over time the AI will study your gameplay and learn to mimic your playstyle.
It specifically reiterates moments where “the gameplay controller can proceed in automatic mode to complete specific game tasks that are difficult for the user.”
Will the Sony AI patent work online?
It has been outlined that it has potential for “competitive multi-player games”. So for example, you really need to leave the game but don’t want to be hit with those growing leave bans you could switch it on and let the AI version of you take over.
This is going to be very controversial as if the online multiplayer scene isn’t heated enough can you imagine the outrage that would ensue when someone dies to AI. Although the idea of sitting back watching your AI kick ass while chowing down on some food does seem like fun this is just a patent and we can’t say for certain whether it’s going to happen at all. Even, if it does happen it won’t be until years in the future.
What do you think about an AI version of you taking over your gameplay?
