Video game company Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) have an exclusive license to make Star Wars games but it’s set to expire soon. However, that doesn’t mean they’re about to stop making them. ‘You should expect us to continue to invest in our Star Wars relationship.’
✅ We love Star Wars.
✅ We look forward to continuing our partnership with Lucasfilm Games.
✅ We’re making more Star Wars games.
✅ BD-1 is still the cutest.— Electronic Arts (@EA) January 13, 2021
Last month, LucasFilm and Ubisoft announced they are working together on an open-world Star Wars game, which makes us believe EA’s long-running exclusive license to create games based on the timeless Star Wars franchise is coming to an end.
EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson shared the company’s position in an earnings call (via Eurogamer).
“…I don’t think you should imagine that the fact that some other people will build some Star Wars games is going to change our commitment to that IP or our ability to build the appropriate number of games,” Wilson said, adding “You should expect us to continue to invest in our Star Wars relationship. It’s been very profitable… and we’re excited by what we’ll be able to do in the future. But you shouldn’t read this as necessarily us building the less titles.”
“We’ve had a long partnership with Disney, both before our exclusive period that gave us a great opportunity to really establish some very strong franchises like Battlefront, like Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, like Jedi: Fallen Order, like Squadrons—you should expect us to continue to invest in our Star Wars relationship. It’s been very profitable to this point—over $3 billion in net bookings—and we’re excited about what we’ll be able to do in the future.”
No signs of slowing for EA and Star Wars
EA said they will “continue to invest” in the franchises they’ve created “as well as some new experiences across platforms for the future.”
Given that the Star Wars games have been hugely successful – making EA a cool £2.2 billion over the years, it’s not exactly hard to see why they’d continue to make them. But money aside, they said “We are proud of our long-standing collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, which will continue for years to come”, adding “We love Star Wars, and we look forward to creating more exciting experiences for players to enjoy.”
Here’s how to watch the Star Wars films in order.
So, it seems there are a lot of Star Wars games we can expect in the future and how can that be a bad thing?
