By 2022 Sony plan to integrate popular communication platform Discord into their PlayStation network. The tech giant has invested in the app and is now a minority shareholder.
140 million gamers use Discord each month, predominantly on PC and mobile devices. This integration hopes to enable gamers who use different platforms to communicate easier.
In a blog post, Sony president and chief exec Jim Ryan said: “We’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories,”
“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
He also mentioned work on the integration has already begun.

This announcement comes a mere two weeks after Microsoft offered £8.7 billion for Discord but they rejected the offer.
Bloomberg believes Discord turned down the offer to focus on a potential public listing in the future.
Some expert gamers believe Mircosoft has really dropped the ball by letting Discord getaway as they’re now going to be woven into their rivals eco-system.
Since the launch of the PlayStation 5 late last year the console has frequently been out of stock.
What is Discord?
It launched back in 2015 and is a free service that allows gamers all around the world to communicate via video, voice and text. It’s available to download on Xbox One and Series X/S, PC and smartphones.
